$223.2M US 69 Highway Expansion Continues in East Texas

The Gateway to the Big Thicket project is advancing through bridge, drainage and traffic-switch work, with completion scheduled for fall 2028.

Construction continues on the $223.2 million Gateway to the Big Thicket project in Tyler County. TxDOT’s October 20 update describes active bridge and roadway work along US 69, from the Hardin County line to south of Black Creek.

The project will deliver a four-lane divided highway with shoulders, new bridges and an additional northbound evacuation lane. It is an ongoing construction program, not a newly announced contract award. Fall 2028 remains the completion target in the reviewed update.

Traffic changes and bridge work advance together

Crews have been preparing a traffic switch while constructing bridge caps and installing roadway safety features. TxDOT also identifies drainage and erosion-control activities, pavement markings, guard fence, milling and work associated with the hike-and-bike trail.

These activities reflect several work fronts operating at once. A traffic switch can release space for the next construction stage while vehicles continue to use the corridor. It should not be mistaken for completion of the full roadway or the end of bridge construction.

A wider corridor improvement

The scheme combines added highway capacity with evacuation provisions and nonmotorized infrastructure. New bridges, shoulders and drainage are part of the same delivery challenge: the route must function as an integrated corridor rather than a series of disconnected improvements.

For nearby communities, the completion date matters, but so do interim changes in access and traffic arrangements. Construction notices should be checked as work progresses because the weekly report is a snapshot of activities rather than a permanent description of lane availability.

Construction opportunities and the remaining schedule

The scale of the project makes it relevant to heavy-civil, bridge, drainage and roadway suppliers. However, progress on an existing contract does not establish that a new procurement window has opened. The construction team is identified in the members-only contractor section.

Future updates worth tracking include implementation of the traffic switch, progress on bridge structures and any revision to the fall 2028 target. No revised completion date or additional contract value was established by the October 20 update used here.
