Irby Completes 160MW Houston IV Battery Storage Project

The 160MW / 320MWh facility is online, bringing another major energy-storage installation into service in the Houston market.
Irby Construction has highlighted completion of the Houston IV battery energy storage project, delivered with SMT Energy and FlexGen. The facility provides 160MW of power and 320MWh of stored energy.
Irby’s September 28 update follows the project’s earlier operational announcement. The company served as engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

From construction to commissioning
Work began in spring 2025. The project partners subsequently reported a six-week commissioning period after construction; that figure describes the commissioning effort, not the duration of the entire build.
Two-hour storage capability
The published energy rating equates to two hours at the full 160MW power rating. This distinguishes the battery’s stored-energy capacity from the instantaneous power it can deliver.
The completed installation adds storage infrastructure to the ERCOT market, where batteries can absorb electricity and discharge it at other times.
