The project would widen about 22 miles of two-lane SH 99 to four lanes between Liberty and Chambers counties.

The Texas Department of Transportation has selected HDR to complete final design for widening Grand Parkway Segments H and I-1 east of Houston. Construction is estimated at about $450 million.

The roughly 22-mile corridor runs from about Community Drive in Liberty County to SH 146 near Mont Belvieu in Chambers County. The segments currently operate as a two-lane toll road, and the project would widen them to four lanes.

The Grand Parkway, State Highway 99, is a planned outer loop around the Houston region. Segments H and I-1 form part of its eastern side, connecting growing areas of Liberty County with the industrial corridor around Mont Belvieu.

Final design will require coordination with several parties. They include Union Pacific, the Harris County Toll Road Authority, both counties and the design-build firm that holds the maintenance contract on the existing lanes.

The value of HDR's design contract was not disclosed, and TxDOT has not announced a construction letting date. The selection date was not announced.
