$58.7M FM 756 Widening Moves Into New Traffic-Control Stage Near Tyler

Temporary signal work at Jeff Davis Drive supports construction of a four-lane road with a central median.

TxDOT’s $58.7 million FM 756 widening project in Smith County has moved into a new traffic-control stage at Jeff Davis Drive. The November 2 weekly update scheduled crews to modify the temporary signals at the intersection, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction through the work area.

Baker and Company is delivering the project, which will widen FM 756 to four lanes with a central median. The finished road will have two travel lanes in each direction. The temporary configuration keeps traffic moving through the intersection while giving crews room to carry out the current stage of work.

Right-of-way preparation and earthwork are progressing along the corridor. Those activities prepare the space and ground for the wider roadway. At Jeff Davis Drive, the signal changes address how drivers pass through the intersection while crews work around the existing traffic lanes.

The November notice identifies a specific change within an active construction program. The $58.7 million figure is the value of the wider FM 756 project, including the work needed to deliver the permanent four-lane corridor. TxDOT is targeting spring 2030 for completion. The update does not give a date for restoring the previous lane arrangement at Jeff Davis Drive or establish the timing of later traffic shifts.
