HITT Breaks Ground on NASA Spaceflight Fabrication Facility in Houston

The 37,625-square-foot high-bay machine shop will bring spaceflight hardware fabrication into a dedicated building at Johnson Space Center.
HITT Contracting and NASA have broken ground on the Applied Spaceflight Fabrication Facility at Johnson Space Center in Houston. HITT is the general contractor for the approximately 37,625-square-foot building, which will support the production of components for NASA’s spaceflight missions. The contractor announced the milestone on October 27.
Designated Building 70, the facility will consolidate fabrication work in a high-bay machine shop. The building’s layout and services will need to accommodate specialized equipment as well as the movement of components through the shop. HITT says it will coordinate with NASA during construction to meet the equipment and operational requirements of the facility.
That coordination will shape the work inside the building. In a precision manufacturing shop, equipment locations affect how the construction team lays out the floor, routes building services and plans access for installation and maintenance. The detailed equipment schedule and specialty trade packages remain undisclosed.
HITT is one of seven firms selected for NASA’s Johnson Space Center Multiple Award Construction Contract, a broader program that supports up to $300 million in campus improvements. The program covers new construction, facility renovation and infrastructure upgrades, including utilities and equipment. The $300 million is the ceiling for the campus-wide program. HITT did not disclose a separate construction value or completion date for Building 70.
