A new ordinance will require regular explanations when major public works projects change scope, fall behind schedule or are cancelled.

Houston residents waiting for roadworks and other public projects will receive more regular information about what is happening behind the construction barriers.

City Council unanimously approved an ordinance October 28 requiring monthly reporting on major infrastructure projects. Houston Public Works will provide information covering roads, drainage, wastewater, parks and sidewalks.

The reports will identify project locations and estimated construction costs, alongside changes to scope and delivery schedules. Significant delays, redesigns and cancellations will also require explanation.

The first report is anticipated December 1. The recurring updates are intended to give residents a clearer view of projects that affect local access, travel and neighborhood infrastructure.

The ordinance changes how the city reports delivery performance. It does not award a new construction contract or establish a separate infrastructure budget.
