Inside Goodwill’s $60M Downtown San Antonio Transformation

The Opportunity Center is converting a former office tower into 154,000 square feet of workforce training and administrative space.
Goodwill San Antonio’s Opportunity Center is moving through construction at 343 W. Houston Street, turning an existing downtown building into a workforce education hub and headquarters. October 19 progress reporting places the project firmly in the construction stage, rather than at an initial proposal or funding announcement.
The approximately $60 million program combines acquisition and redevelopment. It is not a newly awarded $60 million construction contract. The planned 154,000-square-foot facility brings teaching, training and administration together in a building that previously served a different purpose.

An existing building gains a different job
The adaptation is significant because classrooms and vocational training areas place different demands on an office building. Interior layouts, circulation and building services must support the intended education program, while fitting within the existing structure. Those interfaces are central to this refurbishment rather than incidental finishing work.
Healthcare, manufacturing and construction-related training are among the intended uses identified in the reporting. The center’s significance therefore extends beyond the construction period: its operating purpose is to help people obtain skills and enter employment. The building is not being redeveloped as another Goodwill retail outlet.
Construction and opening are separate milestones
Reported plans call for construction to finish around May 2027 and a public opening later in the year. Those dates describe different stages. Completion of building works still leaves operational preparation, equipment installation and readiness for teaching before the center can welcome the public.
The next useful milestones are completion of the remaining interior work, building-services testing and an announced opening date. The latest reporting does not establish fresh subcontract awards or a new tender round. Named delivery-team information is available to paid members below.
